These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of Mimi & Otto, including our website, quizzes, account features, scene submission features, sharing features, and related services.

Mimi & Otto is operated by maics Inc. (“maics,” “we,” “our,” or “us”).

By using Mimi & Otto, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

1. About Mimi & Otto

Mimi & Otto is a service for exploring Japanese onomatopoeia through scenes, guesses, and real response patterns.

Users can view scenes, enter Japanese onomatopoeia or romaji responses, compare answers with native and learner response patterns, and submit scenes for review.

Mimi & Otto is currently provided free of charge. We may introduce paid features, paid plans, or other monetization features in the future. If we do, we will provide applicable pricing, payment terms, cancellation terms, and other required information before purchase.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Mimi & Otto.

If you are under 13, you may not create an account, submit content, or use Mimi & Otto.

By using the service, you represent that you are at least 13 years old and have the legal capacity to agree to these Terms.

3. Accounts

Some features may require an account.

When you create an account, you agree to provide accurate information and keep your login credentials secure. You are responsible for activities that occur under your account.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, abuse the service, or create legal, security, or operational risks.

4. Display name

You may set a display name in Settings.

Your display name may appear publicly on scenes you submit if:

  • You have set a display name
  • You have enabled display name attribution
  • Your submitted scene is approved and published

Your email address will not be used as your public display name. If you do not want your name to appear publicly, leave your display name blank or turn off attribution in Settings.

You may not use a display name that is misleading, offensive, infringing, impersonates another person, or violates these Terms.

5. Quiz answers and response data

When you answer a quiz, your answer may be saved and used to generate response distributions, including native and learner response patterns.

Your answers may be aggregated and displayed to other users. We do not publicly display your email address together with your answers.

You agree that Mimi & Otto may use submitted answers to operate, improve, analyze, and display response patterns within the service.

Quiz response patterns are provided for exploration and learning. They are not guaranteed to represent definitive linguistic correctness, complete cultural consensus, or academic research findings.

6. User-submitted scenes

You may submit scenes to Mimi & Otto.

By submitting content, you represent and warrant that:

  • You own the content or have the necessary rights and permissions to submit it
  • Your submission does not infringe copyrights, trademarks, privacy rights, publicity rights, or other rights of third parties
  • Your submission does not contain illegal, harmful, abusive, sexually explicit, discriminatory, hateful, violent, or otherwise inappropriate content
  • If your submission includes identifiable people, you have obtained appropriate permission where necessary
  • Your submission complies with these Terms and applicable laws

You are solely responsible for the content you submit.

7. Review and moderation

Submitted scenes are not automatically published.

We may review submitted scenes using automated tools, including Google Cloud Vision SafeSearch, and through manual review by our team.

We may approve, reject, remove, hide, crop, resize, or otherwise adjust submitted scenes for display within the service.

We may also remove scenes, answers, display names, accounts, or other content that we believe violate these Terms or harm the experience for other users.

We are not obligated to publish any submitted content.

8. Rights you grant to us

You retain ownership of content you submit to Mimi & Otto.

However, by submitting content, you grant maics Inc. a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable, and transferable license to use, host, store, reproduce, display, publish, distribute, crop, resize, modify for formatting, create thumbnails from, and otherwise use your submitted content in connection with Mimi & Otto.

This license allows us to:

  • Display your submitted scene in quizzes
  • Show the scene to other users
  • Use the scene in shared result pages
  • Resize, crop, or adjust the scene for the service interface
  • Review and moderate the scene
  • Promote Mimi & Otto using the scene in service-related contexts

No compensation, payment, royalty, or other consideration will be owed to you for submitted content.

If you request deletion of submitted content, we will review the request and take reasonable steps to remove it where appropriate. However, copies may remain in backups, logs, cached pages, shared pages, or other technical systems for a reasonable period.

9. Prohibited conduct

You agree not to:

  • Submit content you do not have the right to use
  • Submit copyrighted images, screenshots, illustrations, photos, or other materials without permission
  • Submit sexually explicit, violent, hateful, discriminatory, harassing, or illegal content
  • Submit content involving minors in an inappropriate or unsafe context
  • Submit malware, spam, or deceptive content
  • Attempt to manipulate response distributions
  • Create multiple accounts or use automated tools to abuse the service
  • Scrape, crawl, or harvest data without permission
  • Interfere with the security or operation of the service
  • Reverse engineer or attempt to access non-public systems
  • Use Mimi & Otto in violation of applicable laws

10. Sharing features

Mimi & Otto may allow you to share quiz results through third-party services such as X / Twitter.

When you use sharing features, a shared result page may be created. Shared result pages may display:

  • The scene
  • The shared answer
  • Response distributions
  • A link allowing others to answer the same scene

Shared links do not include your email address, user ID, or anonymous ID.

Your use of X / Twitter or other third-party services is subject to those services’ own terms and policies.

11. Third-party services

Mimi & Otto uses third-party services to operate and improve the service, including:

  • Supabase
  • Google Cloud Platform
  • Google Cloud Vision SafeSearch
  • Google Tag Manager
  • Google Analytics 4
  • Google Search Console
  • X / Twitter

We are not responsible for third-party services, websites, or platforms that we do not control.

12. No paid features at MVP stage

Mimi & Otto is currently free to use.

We may introduce paid features, subscriptions, donations, support payments, or other paid offerings in the future.

If paid offerings are introduced, we will provide additional terms, pricing, payment methods, cancellation policies, refund policies, and legally required disclosures before purchase.

13. Service changes and availability

We may modify, suspend, or discontinue all or part of Mimi & Otto at any time.

We do not guarantee that the service will always be available, uninterrupted, secure, or error-free.

We may change features, remove content, adjust response displays, modify moderation rules, or update the service design at our discretion.

14. Disclaimers

Mimi & Otto is provided “as is” and “as available.”

We make no warranties, express or implied, regarding:

  • Accuracy of quiz results
  • Completeness of response distributions
  • Linguistic correctness of any answer
  • Availability of the service
  • Suitability for any particular purpose
  • Non-infringement of user-submitted content

Mimi & Otto is intended for cultural and language exploration. It is not a substitute for professional linguistic, educational, legal, or other expert advice.

15. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, maics Inc. will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of profits, data, goodwill, or other intangible losses arising from or related to your use of Mimi & Otto.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

16. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless maics Inc. from and against claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses arising from:

  • Your use of Mimi & Otto
  • Your submitted content
  • Your violation of these Terms
  • Your violation of any law or third-party rights

17. Termination

You may stop using Mimi & Otto at any time.

We may suspend or terminate your access to Mimi & Otto if we believe you have violated these Terms, created risk for the service or other users, or used the service inappropriately.

After termination, certain provisions of these Terms will continue to apply, including provisions related to user-submitted content, licenses, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnity, and governing law.

18. Account deletion

At MVP stage, account deletion is handled by inquiry.

If you would like to request deletion of your account or personal information, please contact us at contact@maics.jp.

We will review and respond to deletion requests within a reasonable period, subject to legal, technical, and operational limitations.

19. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time.

If we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date and may provide additional notice where appropriate.

Your continued use of Mimi & Otto after the updated Terms become effective means you accept the updated Terms.

20. Governing law and jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by the laws of Japan, without regard to conflict of law principles.

The Tokyo District Court shall have exclusive jurisdiction over disputes arising from or related to these Terms or Mimi & Otto, unless otherwise required by applicable law.
