Mimi & Otto (“Mimi & Otto,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) is operated by maics Inc., a company based in Japan.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information when you use Mimi & Otto, including our website, quizzes, account features, scene submission features, and related services.

By using Mimi & Otto, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this Privacy Policy.


1. Who can use Mimi & Otto

Mimi & Otto is not intended for children under 13 years old.

If you are under 13, you may not create an account, submit content, or use features that require personal information. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take reasonable steps to delete it.


2. Information we collect

We may collect the following types of information.

Account information

When you create an account or log in, we collect information necessary for authentication, such as:

  • Email address
  • Authentication identifiers
  • Login-related information

We use Supabase Auth to provide authentication.

Profile information

If you choose to set a profile, we may collect:

  • Display name
  • Display name visibility setting

Your display name may be shown publicly on scenes you submit if you choose to show it. Your email address will not be shown publicly as your display name.

Quiz response information

When you answer a quiz, we may collect:

  • Your answer text
  • Normalized answer text used for aggregation
  • The quiz or scene you answered
  • Whether you identify as a native speaker or learner, if applicable
  • Anonymous identifier or user account identifier
  • Date and time of response

Quiz answers may be aggregated and displayed to other users as response distributions. We do not publicly display your email address together with your quiz answers.

Submitted content

If you submit a scene, we may collect:

  • Submitted image
  • Display caption
  • Submission status
  • Review status
  • Moderation results
  • Information about the submitting account

Submitted scenes may be reviewed before they appear publicly. If approved, submitted scenes may be shown to other users together with your display name if your display name is set and public attribution is enabled.

Automatically collected information

We may automatically collect technical and usage information, including:

  • Device and browser information
  • Pages viewed
  • Interactions with the service
  • Referring URLs
  • Approximate usage data
  • Cookies, localStorage, and similar technologies
  • Anonymous identifiers used to manage answered quizzes and response aggregation

We may use cookies or localStorage to remember answered quizzes, reduce duplicate counting in response distributions, support basic functionality, and analyze usage.


3. How we use information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide and operate Mimi & Otto
  • Authenticate users
  • Save and display quiz responses
  • Aggregate native and learner response patterns
  • Manage submitted scenes
  • Review submitted images for safety and rights issues
  • Prevent abuse, spam, or inappropriate use
  • Improve the service
  • Understand usage through analytics
  • Respond to inquiries
  • Maintain security and reliability

We do not use your email address for marketing emails. At MVP stage, we only use email for account-related purposes, such as email verification and authentication.


4. User-submitted content

If you submit a scene, you understand that:

  • Your submitted image may be reviewed before publication
  • Your submitted image may be checked using automated tools such as Google Cloud Vision SafeSearch
  • Our team may also manually review submitted images for copyright, safety, and appropriateness
  • We may reject, remove, crop, resize, or otherwise adjust submitted scenes for display within the service
  • Approved scenes may be shown publicly to other users
  • Your display name may be shown with your submitted scene if you have set a display name and enabled public attribution

You should only submit images that you have the right to use.


5. Analytics and third-party services

We use third-party services to operate, secure, improve, and analyze Mimi & Otto.

These may include:

  • Supabase: authentication, database, storage, and backend services
  • Google Cloud Platform: hosting, infrastructure, security, and image review support
  • Google Cloud Vision SafeSearch: automated image safety screening
  • Google Tag Manager: tag management
  • Google Analytics 4: usage analytics
  • Google Search Console: search performance monitoring
  • X / Twitter: sharing functionality

These services may process information according to their own privacy policies and terms.

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how users interact with Mimi & Otto. Google Analytics may use cookies or similar technologies to collect usage information. We do not send your email address or other directly identifying account information to Google Analytics.


6. Cookies, localStorage, and similar technologies

We may use cookies, localStorage, and similar technologies to:

  • Maintain basic functionality
  • Store anonymous identifiers
  • Remember answered quizzes
  • Reduce duplicate counting in response aggregation
  • Support login and security features
  • Analyze usage through Google Analytics

You may be able to disable cookies through your browser settings. However, some parts of Mimi & Otto may not work properly if cookies or localStorage are disabled.


7. Public information

The following information may be visible to other users:

  • Approved scenes you submit
  • Display captions attached to approved scenes
  • Your display name, if you have set one and enabled public attribution
  • Aggregated quiz response results
  • Shared result pages created through the share feature

We do not publicly display your email address.


8. Sharing of information

We may share information in the following cases:

Service providers

We may share information with service providers that help us operate Mimi & Otto, such as Supabase, Google Cloud Platform, Google Analytics, and related infrastructure providers.

Public content

Approved submitted scenes, display captions, public display names, aggregated answers, and shared result pages may be visible to other users.

Legal and safety reasons

We may disclose information if we believe it is necessary to:

  • Comply with law or legal process
  • Protect the rights, safety, or property of Mimi & Otto, maics Inc., users, or others
  • Investigate abuse, security issues, or violations of our Terms of Use

Business transfers

If Mimi & Otto or maics Inc. is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction.


9. Data retention

We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide and improve Mimi & Otto, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.

User-submitted scenes and aggregated responses may remain available unless removed by us or upon a valid deletion request, subject to technical, legal, and operational limitations.

10. Security

We take reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures to protect information. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Authentication is handled through Supabase Auth. Submitted images and service data are stored and processed using cloud service providers such as Supabase and Google Cloud Platform.


11. International users

Mimi & Otto is operated by maics Inc. in Japan. If you use the service from the United States or another country, your information may be processed in Japan and other countries where our service providers operate.

By using Mimi & Otto, you understand that your information may be processed outside your country of residence.


12. Your choices

You may:

  • Update your display name in Settings
  • Turn off display name attribution for submitted scenes
  • Leave your display name blank to avoid public attribution
  • Disable cookies through your browser settings
  • Contact us to request deletion of your account or personal information

At MVP stage, account deletion is handled by inquiry. To request deletion, contact us at contact@maics.jp.


13. No sale of personal information

We do not sell your personal information.

We use analytics and service providers to operate and improve Mimi & Otto, but we do not sell your email address, account information, or submitted content to third parties.


14. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date and may provide additional notice where appropriate.

Your continued use of Mimi & Otto after changes become effective means you accept the updated Privacy Policy.
